La Grande Madre (The Great Mother) at Palazzo Reale in Milan explores the iconography of motherhood in the art and visual culture of the 20th and 21st centuries, from early avant-garde movements to the present. It traces the history of women’s empowerment, chronicling gender struggles, sexual politics, and clashes between tradition and emancipation.
The exhibition layout covers some 2000 square meters and includes work from 127 international artists, among which Giannina Censi, Marisa Mori, Sophie Taeuber-Arp, Frida Kahlo, Dora Maar, Maria Maiolino, Yoko Ono, Barbara Kruger and Cindy Sherman.
