The exhibition Trompe l’Oeil – I Veri Inganni della Fotografia (The Real Tricks of Photography) brings together the work of 32 students of the Master in Photography and Visual Design, organised by Fondazione Forma and NABA, Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti (New Academy of Fine Arts).
Trompe l’oeil is historically a painting technique that creates the perception of three dimensions on a surface that only has two dimensions. It is the power of illusion that casts doubt on our ability to distinguish between reality and representation, and in that sense photography is a modern application of this old technique.
The exhibition presents a series of images and videos on the relationship between truth and fiction, bringing to the extreme the paradox that, even today, despite digital technology, photography is considered an indisputable “reality test”, as well as a personal elaboration of the same reality which it should document.
How this twofold interpretation is possible, and what are its various implications, is the theme of Trompe l’Oeil, a journey to the origins of our vision and trust that we attach to the camera.
